July Editorial – My Thoughts for the Day.

Posted by: sequencedancemag on: July 4, 2009

My thoughts for the day are, “ if the world of dance would start to work and co-operate  with one another instead of competing with each other, we would have a happier future.”

Once again I have written to an Association asking for information about their Inventive Sequence Dance, competition times, dates and costs, and have had no reply.

Sequence Dance Mag is about letting its readers know about what is going on in the world of  Adult Ballroom and Sequence Dancing. If our readers don’t have information they need, then it is possible   that bookings will be lost. If the whole world of dancing don’t know when your event is on and what it is about ,then the event has lost potential to draw bookings from a wider audience.  Readers may never book but at least they  have learned what was going on and just maybe they will go along next year.

Many dancers who have danced for years   know  nothing about Dance Associations, dance competitions, or the BDC. New people coming into dancing have no given route into the hierarchy and how the system works. We hope we can change this.

I want dancers to know what Sequence Dancing is and where they can find Dance Schools who teach Sequence Dancing in any local area. These schools may be familiar to the regular dancer but new dancers coming into Sequence often cannot understand why they are channelled into a ballroom class when they want to do “Sequence Dancing.”

We think teachers talking about their classes and their aims and objectives, rather than listing the classes with no backup information, will encourage recruitment. Our aim is to bring all the  information together so that we can list schools and dances are listed by area, with clear details of what a new student can expect from the classes they choose.  This works for us and we hope it can work for you.

Names, familiar to the regular dancer, means nothing to the newcomer. They have all those Who, What, Where, Why and When questions they want answered. If we want new dancers to be part of the dance family, it is up to us to market our product. I believe we need to  inform and encourage them to stay beyond the classroom, and know what is on offer.I believe this is in everyone’s best interest.

Basic information on times dates and entrance costs is all that is necessary for Inventive Competitions, although it would be nice to have the names of competitors, the judges and the running order of the dancers. We do realize this  is a very busy time for the organisers but if any promoter wants to show their event in the best light, then preparation is essential. The report after the Easter Festival and the pictures that were posted drew an amazing amount of interest in hits to the blog and this feature is still getting regular hits.  Here readers wanted to become part of what had gone on and it is just a pity that they photos had not been better and other dancers who attended had not written their comments. Perhaps that is part of our preparation next time.

What have the Associations or Schools to loose? If they have just one more network of people they can reach and advertise their work to, then is it not worth the effort of contacting us or anyone else for that matter who will promote their work ? We do provide links directly into all the Associations to make information as accessible as possible, what we cannot give at present is the reason why our readers should use these links.

This is Free Advertising and there are no catches that we know about but people have to cooperate with us.

New dancers, and we often have between 120 and 160 every term in our own classes so we do have some idea about the information they seek, could go on to be a  customer of your service, if you are prepared to let them know about it. When they are ready they could be going to your dance, your holiday, your school or eventually join your Association and become teachers themselves.

Nothing can be lost and you might have everything to gain.

All we ask is that you check the material after it comes up and get back to us if there are any errors. We are happy to amend or erase if you are not happy.

We do this because we want dancing to be part of the lives of as many people as possible, and hope you will support us.
